Description: The unbranched, leafless stems of this sunflower may reach 24" tall when flowering. Lanceolate to linear leaves are mostly basal, opposite or alternate, and measure 4"–10" long and ½"–1" wide, with a white midvein. The flower heads average 2½"–3" across, with a yellow disk.

Bloom Season: July–October

Habitat/Range: Endemic to wet prairies and flatwoods of Duval, Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns, and Volusia Counties (historically in Clay County)

Comments: The name carnosus means “fleshy” and relates to the leaves. This state-listed endangered species was first collected in Duval County in July 1897 and is only known from northeastern Florida, where most of the existing populations are on unprotected private land. The common name alludes to its habit of growing along lake margins, but it will tolerate dry soils. Bees and butterflies frequent the disk flowers for nectar. Rare.
